Seventh-graders use stop motion to tell the story of cells

When it comes to learning about cells, Santa Catalina Lower and Middle School seventh-graders get animated.

Students created stop-motion videos to explain the cell cycle. They focused on what happens to the DNA during the major events of the cycle, from the formation of cells to their division. Working with partners, students used clay, pipe cleaners, candy, toys, and more to make a representation of a cell and to create little characters that guide the cell through its various phases.

According to science teacher Theresa Clarkson, the activity gave students a hands-on way to understand concepts that they can’t see.
